Poker Legend Watch: Phil Hellmuth

Followers of poker are well versed with the infamous antics of card playing legend Phil Hellmuth. The ‘Poker Brat’ has clinched an astounding 14 WSOP bracelets in his career so far, and shows no signs of slowing down.


Phil begin playing cards with his family and first picked up Texas Hold ‘Em at the UW student union. His best games were against his grandmother, Agnes Slattery, to whom he later dedicated his Harper Collins book Play Poker Like the Pro’s.

Hellmuth attended the University of Wisconsin for three years but dropped out after having made money from local games. He travelled to Las Vegas on multiple occasions before winning at the tables, and returned to Madison to bolster a bankroll by working as a field labourer for Blaine Farms.

In 1989, Hellmuth became the youngest ever player to ship the WSOP Main Event by beating two-time defending champions Johnny Chan during heads-ups. However, his record was broken in 2008 by Peter Eastgate. Presently, he hold the record for the most WSOP cashes (108) as well as the most number of final table appearances (52). Hellmuth went on to accumulate another 13 bracelets, with the most recent on coming in 2015, when he won the $10,000 Seven-Card Razz event. With $22,110,980 in live-earnings, Hellmuth ranks 9th on the all-time money list.
